The Competitive Impact deciles are formed by sorting all active patent families in the PatentSight database by their Competitive Impact and subsequently dividing the patent families in this ranking into ten equal groups from the top to the bottom. As a result, the global top 10% of the patent families by Competitive Impact form the Competitive Impact decile "10", whereas the global bottom 10% of the patent families by Competitive Impact form the Competitive Impact decile "1". Note that, if inactive patent families are included in the search panel, the Competitive Impact ranking to form the deciles is based on both active and inactive patent families, which affects the assignment of patent families into the deciles.
To calculate the Competitive Impact deciles, we consider all active patent families available in the entire PatentSight database.
- First, we rank all active patent families available in the PatentSight database by their Competitive Impact from highest to lowest.
- Next, we divide the patent families in this ranking into ten equal groups from the top to the bottom. These ten parts are the so-called Competitive Impact deciles. The global top 10% of patent families by Competitive Impact form the Competitive Impact decile 10. The global bottom 10% of patent families by Competitive Impact form the Competitive Impact decile 1
You can visualize the second step by running an empty search and applying the template "Value Distribution". Since the population defined by this search translates into all active patent families available in PatentSight, each Competitive Impact decile will contain the same number of patent families ("Portfolio Size"; grey columns)
If you now add an owner or any other search field to the search panel, all patent families that do not meet the search criteria are removed from the Value Distribution chart. This means that only those patent families that meet the search criteria remain in the chart. However, their allocation as of Competitive Impact decile does not change.
For example, the owner RELX owned a total of 224 active patent families as of Aug 31, 2023. Out of these, 58 patent families show up in decile 10. This means that these 58 patent families belong to the global top 10% of patent families which have the highest Competitive Impact in the entire PatentSight database.
At the same time, this owner has 3 patent families that show up in decile 1. This means that this owner also has 3 patent families that belong to the global bottom 10% with the lowest Competitive Impact™ in the entire PatentSight database.
