What is the Query Builder?
The query builder in the IPlytics Platform is a versatile and powerful tool designed to facilitate detailed and precise searches across the platform's extensive databases. It functions as the gateway for users to explore and examine a wide range of patents, SEPs, and standards data, allowing the user to customize their queries to fulfill particular research and analysis requirements.
At its core, the query builder provides an intuitive interface that accommodates both visual and expert modes, addressing the needs of users with different levels of proficiency. . The visual mode provides an intuitive, drag-and-drop interface that allows users to construct complex queries without needing to write code. This mode is ideal for users who prefer a more graphical approach to building their search criteria. On the other hand, the expert mode offers advanced users the ability to input queries directly using a syntax-based approach, providing greater flexibility and control over the search parameters. The query builder can be set to visual or expert mode:
We strongly suggest using the visual query builder.
How does the Query Builder work?
Each database contains its own specific search fields. By clicking on the title of the search field, you can choose the search field that meets your needs:
The query builder supports a wide range of search fields, allowing users to filter results based on specific criteria such as patent numbers, applicant names, standard document IDs, and technology generations. Users have the ability to add multiple search fields and combine them using Boolean operators such as AND, OR, and NOT to further refine their searches.
For example, in the SEP database, you can search for all patents declared to 5G by searching for the technology generation 5G:
However, you can also extend your search and search for all patents declared to 5G or 4G. Therefore, you can use another query line and use the OR operator on the left side. Query lines can be added under each query line by clicking on the query line and using the + sign on the right side of the query line.

The IPlytics platform also supports wildcard and fuzzy searches, enabling users to find variations of search terms and similar terms, respectively.
For example, you can use “*” in your input to truncate the word and permit different endings of the word. Therefore, you can use “communicat*” which will show you results where “communication” or “communicator” is mentioned you can see here in a title search:
Nested searches are another powerful feature of the query builder, allowing users to organize complex search statements using parentheses to ensure the correct combination of terms and operators. This is particularly useful for conducting in-depth analyses that require multiple layers of search criteria.
Moreover, the query builder features a filter bar that enables users to refine their search results post-query execution. Filters can be applied to narrow down results based on attributes such as patent status, industry sector, and publication date, among others. This feature ensures that users can swiftly and effectively focus on the most relevant data for their particular requirements. You can see the filter bar on the right side of the search result or analytical area:
Summary
Overall, the query builder in the IPlytics Platform is an essential tool for conducting comprehensive and targeted searches, empowering users to navigate the complex landscape of patents and standards with precision and simplicity. Whether for competitive analysis, portfolio management, or strategic planning, the query builder provides the flexibility and depth needed to extract valuable insights from the platform's extensive data resources.
