Overview
We’re excited to announce an important update to the Video Coding technology package in IPlytics. As part of this enhancement, IPlytics has added an AV2 Undeclared landscape to Video Codec Search, covering patents that are not declared but are potentially essential to the AV2 specification developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia).
AVC, HEVC, VVC, VP9, and AV1 were already available within the Video Coding technology package. This update builds on that foundation by adding IPlytics-identified undeclared AV2 patents, so AV2 can now be searched, filtered, and tracked alongside HEVC, VVC, and AV1 as this landscape takes shape.
An undeclared patent is a patent that has not been formally declared as standard-essential to a standards organization or disclosed via a patent pool. IPlytics finds those relevant to the specific technology standard using the LexisNexis Classification methodology.
What’s New
AV2 Undeclared Landscape
The Video Coding technology package now includes an AV2 Undeclared landscape in Video Codec Search, in addition to the existing AVC, HEVC, VVC, VP9, and AV1 landscapes.
This expansion adds:
- Undeclared Patents for AV2 - Patents identified by IPlytics using documented classification approaches and expert validation as potentially essential to the AV2 specification, even where no formal declaration has been made.
- AV2 in Video Codec Search - AV2 can now be searched, filtered, and tracked in the Video Coding technology package alongside HEVC, VVC, and AV1.
Existing AVC, HEVC, VVC, VP9, and AV1 coverage remains unchanged. Together, these layers provide a more comprehensive representation of the video coding landscape, aligned with how undeclared patent coverage is handled in other IPlytics technology packages.
Why This Matters
AV2 is a landscape that is still forming. AOMedia finalized the AV2 specification in May 2026, and licensing positions and pool structures from third parties have not yet fully settled. Starting to identify and monitor potentially essential patents now gives customers early visibility into who may hold relevant rights.
Including the AV2 Undeclared landscape helps users:
- Identify and monitor potentially essential AV2 patents earlier, ahead of licensing positions and pool structures fully settling
- Understand competitive positioning as AV2 portfolios take shape
- Compare AV2 against HEVC, VVC, and AV1 within a single package
- Support freedom to operate and risk analysis as AV2 moves toward adoption
By extending Video Coding coverage to AV2 ahead of settled licensing structures, IPlytics enables an earlier and more realistic view of the underlying IP landscape.
Technology Context: AV2 in Scope
AV2 is the successor to AV1 from the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). Key characteristics include:
- Specification finalized by AOMedia in May 2026
- Operates as a traditional hybrid video coding framework
- Defines an entirely new bitstream syntax, semantics, and decoding process
- Delivers approximately 30% better compression efficiency than AV1
Because AV2 defines its own bitstream syntax, semantics, and decoding process rather than extending AV1, it is provided as a separate landscape that can be selected independently or alongside AV1, HEVC, and VVC. As with all undeclared data, these patents are research and prioritization inputs, not legal conclusions on essentiality, validity, infringement, or licensing obligations.

The AV2 Undeclared landscape is available as part of the Video Coding technology package in IPlytics. The package is a licensed add-on, and availability depends on your subscription and the technologies enabled within your IPlytics environment.
