Age charts available in Cipher and how to interpret them
Cipher Age Datasets
The age section has 20 datasets allowing a wide set of analysis. Simply click the age section of your report dashboard to view all of the age charts available in your report.
You can add any chart in cipher to a saved list of charts by selecting the tick in the top right of the chart icon as shown below. To save your chart selections for review later on, click the 'tick' icon in the top left of your report screen and select 'save'. For more information on saved charts, click here.
Ciphers Age Data is broken down into datasets providing analysis of:
· Age By Technology
· Age By Organisation
The analysis you want to undertake, will determine the Age chart you select. Below is a description of each chart type to help to choose the relevant ones for your analysis:
Granted families, by organisation & priority year
The dataset above shows the number of granted families per organisation by priority year, since 1985 (the date filter can be used to specify a date range). This illustrates the comparative changes in strategy on a patent family level, for each organisation of your report.
Handy Hint: For a report incorporating multiple technologies, you can compare trends for organisations across selected technologies by using the technology filter in the top right of your report. This allows you to focus on whether the rate of granted families is growing or reducing for a specific technology or group of technologies, for each organisation.
Granted families, by technology & priority year
The dataset above shows the number of granted families per technology by priority year, since 1985 (the date filter can be used to specify a date range). This illustrates the comparative changes in technology focus over time across the organisations of your report, on a patent family level.
Handy Hint: For a report incorporating multiple organisations, you can compare trends for technologies across selected organisations by using the organisation filter in the top right of your report. This allows you to focus on whether the rate of granted families is growing or reducing for a specific organisation or group of organisations, for each technology area.
Granted patents, by organisation & priority year
The dataset above shows the number of granted patents per organisation by priority year, since 1985 (the date filter can be used to specify a date range). This illustrates the comparative changes in strategy for each organisation on an individual patent level.
Handy Hint: For a report incorporating multiple technologies, you can compare trends for organisations across selected technologies by using the technology filter in the top right of your report. This allows you to focus on whether the rate of granted patents is growing or reducing for a specific technology or group of technologies, for each organisation.
Pending Families, by organisation & priority year
The dataset above shows the number of pending families per organisation by priority year, since 1985 (the date filter can be used to specify a date range). This illustrates the comparative changes in strategy for each organisation on a patent family level.
Handy Hint: For a report incorporating multiple technologies, you can compare trends for organisations across selected technologies by using the technology filter in the top right of your report. This allows you to focus on whether the rate of pending families is growing or reducing for a specific technology or group of technologies, for each organisation.
Pending Families By Technology and priority year
The dataset above shows the number of pending families per technology by priority year, since 1985 (the date filter can be used to specify a date range). This illustrates the comparative changes in technology focus for the specified group of organisations over time on a patent family level.
Handy Hint: For a report incorporating multiple organisations, you can compare trends for technologies across selected organisations by using the organisation filter in the top right of your report. This allows you to focus on whether the rate of pending families is growing or reducing for a specific organisation or group of organisations, for each technology area.
Granted Families By Organisation and Grant Year
The dataset above shows the number of granted families per organisation by grant year, since 1985 (the date filter can be used to specify a date range). This illustrates the comparative changes in strategy for each organisation on a patent family level, based on the year they were granted.
Handy Hint: For a report incorporating multiple technologies, you can compare trends for organisations across selected technologies by using the technology filter in the top right of your report. This allows you to focus on whether the rate of granted patents is growing or reducing for a specific technology or group of technologies, for each organisation.

Historical expiry age per family, by organisation
The dataset above shows the age at expiry, in years, for each organisation, calculated from priority date to expiry date. This only shows patents families that have already expired, due to age or non-payment.
Historical expiry age per family, by technology
Age at expiry, in years, for each technology. Calculated from priority date to expiry date. Only shows patents families that have already expired, due to age or non-payment.
Percentage of families expired by age, by organisation
Cumulative percentage of families expired by age in years, for each organisation. Age at expiry is calculated from priority date to expiry date. Only shows patent families that have already expired, due to age or non-payment.
This chart answers the question 'In what year from 1 to 20 in a patent families life, does a company expire the asset?', for example 5% expire the asset in year one, versus 100% in year 20. This allows the comparison of pace at which this occurs between companies.
Future projected expiry age, by organisation
The dataset above shows when each organisation's currently granted patent families are due to expire (assuming patent families reach maximum age of 20 years), illustrating the years that will see a lot of expiration and thus a changing a landscape.
Filter to a specific technology in your report to see the projected expiry for selected technologies for each organisation.
Future projected expiry age, by technology
The dataset above shows when each technology's currently granted patent families are due to expire (assuming patent families reach a maximum age of 20 years), illustrating when there are set to be periods of flux in the technology landscape and vice versa.
Filter to a specific organisation in your report to see the projected expiry for the selected organisation only, for each technology area.
