PVIX charts available in Cipher and how to interpret them
The PVIX section has 12 datasets allowing a wide set of analysis. Simply click the Portfolio Value Index (PVIX) section of your report dashboard to view all of the PVIX charts available in your report.
You can add any chart in cipher to a saved list of charts by selecting the tick in the top right of the chart icon as shown below. To save your chart selections for review later on, click the 'tick' icon in the top left of your report screen and select 'save'. For more information on saved charts, click here.
The PVIX Methodology Explained
The PVIX datasets are ideal if you wish to review or compare portfolios, and evaluate portfolio strength via an industry recognised score. The Portfolio Value Index score is a metric developed by Unified Patents, and is designed to measure patent portfolio 'value' based on published academic studies. The score is based on three components: Family, Market, and Reputation.
Every patent family with at least one granted member is assigned a PVIX score. Once each patent family has been assigned a PVIX score, the raw scores are renormalised so as to fall within 0 and 100.
Please note that whilst reference is made here to portfolio value, it is better referenced in relation to relative portfolio strengths and weaknesses indicated by score within the PVIX report. Whether we're referring to value or quality, or which patent family is the 'best', we can but provide a score based on certain criteria in order to score the relative strength or weakness of a portfolio or patent family.
More information on the PVIX methodology can be found here: Portfolio Value Index (PVIX) Methodology

Cipher's PVIX datasets Descriptions
The analysis you want to undertake, will determine the PVIX Score chart you select. Below is a description of each chart type to help to choose the relevant ones for your analysis.
PVIX charts with a normalised score
Total PVIX Score - by organisation and technology
The dataset above shows the total PVIX score for granted patent families of your report, illustrating portfolio strength, split by organisation, and technology. The score is normalised for size and strength, for instance you could have a portfolio of half the size and strength, scoring the same as a portfolio of twice the size and half the strength.
Total PVIX Score - by organisation
The dataset above shows the total PVIX score for granted patent families of your report, illustrating portfolio strength, split by organisation. The score is normalised for size and strength, for instance you could have a portfolio of half the size and strength, scoring the same as a portfolio of twice the size and half the strength.
Total PVIX Score - by technology
The dataset above shows the total PVIX score for granted patent families of your report, illustrating portfolio strength, split by technology. The score is normalised for size and strength, for instance you could have a portfolio of half the size and strength, scoring the same as a portfolio of twice the size and half the strength.
PVIX Score Charts with an average score
Average PVIX Score - by organisation and technology
The average PVIX score for granted patent families of your report, illustrating portfolio strength, split by organisation and technology. The average score is across size and strength in order to enable a direct comparison across portfolios.
Average PVIX Score distribution - by organisation
The average PVIX score for granted patent families of your report, illustrating portfolio strength, split by organisation. The average score is across size and strength in order to enable a direct comparison across portfolios.
Average PVIX Score distribution - by technology
The average PVIX score for granted patent families of your report, illustrating portfolio strength, split by technology. The average score is across size and strength in order to enable a direct comparison across portfolios.
Average PVIX Score - by organisation and priority year
The average PVIX score split by organisation and priority year, for granted patent families of your report. It allows you to see when organisations were filing their highest or lowest scoring patents.
If your highest scoring patents were filed in 2008, and scores have been low since then, this could signify a problem for the portfolio.
The darker fields here signify highest scoring patents; lighter fields signify lowest scoring patents. Lighter fields in more recent years are likely due to a lower number of citations.
The scores in this dataset split by organisation often correlate to the individual technologies per organisation, which can be reviewed in the next dataset.

The average PVIX score split by technology and priority year, for granted patent families of your report. It allows you to see when organisations were filing their highest or lowest scoring patents, in each technology area.
Handy Hint:
You can use the Organisation filter at the top of your report to see these results broken down by technology, for a selected organisation in your report.
Average PVIX Score - by organisation and size
The average PVIX score by organisation and size. The size comparison charts break apart the number of granted patent families an organisation has, and the strength (average PVIX score). This dataset provides the overall position for the whole portfolio that appears in the report, split by Organisation.
You can clearly see who has the most ('X' axis), but you can also clearly see the size to strength comparison in these charts, as the average PVIX score is shown on the 'Y' axis.
Average PVIX Score - by technology and size
The average PVIX score by technology and size. The size comparison charts break apart the number of granted patent families by technology, and the strength (average PVIX score).
You can clearly see where there are the most patent families per technology ('X' axis), compared to the strength comparison in these charts ('Y' axis), where the average PVIX score is shown.
PVIX Score Charts showing the distribution of score
PVIX Score distribution - by organisation
Distribution of PVIX score by organisation. The percentage of patent families is shown in each score category for each organisation.
In the previous dataset looking at mean average scores, a 'Company A' may have an average of 60 and the majority of their portfolio falls into this score, however the same can apply where 'Company B' has a similar average score, but half of their portfolio may have a high score of 70. These reflect very different portfolios.
In reviewing your competitors, the part of the portfolio with a score of 50 you may ignore, but the part of their portfolio with a score in the 70’s might pose a problem for you. The organisation and technology histograms provide a spread of these scores visually.

PVIX Score at Patent Family level
Each granted patent family of your report is given a PVIX score between zero and 100, which allows for the metrics seen in the datasets above. The individual score can be found in the data view of your report.
The data view can be accessed by either clicking into the data of the chart/dataset, or by clicking into the 'Data - Patent families list' tile, at the bottom of your report:
To view the individual PVIX Scores, ensure that the 'PVIX Score' column is selected in the 'Columns' drop down menu:
