Selecting a Chart From the Template Selection
Select a template from the template area under "Analysis Templates" and start an analysis.
Expand "Analysis Templates."

Click on "Charts" to select a suitable template.

Click on the desired template, e.g., the "Quantity vs. Quality". |
Insert a Blank Chart
You can also insert a chart via "Insert" → "Chart" in the main toolbar.
Click on "insert."

Click on "Chart" to insert a chart.

General Chart Setup
Click on "Title bar" to enter a chart name.

Click on "Bubble Area: Patent Asset Index" to format the bubbles or to select a different measure. | |
The chart legend lists the items by which your chart is grouped (here: Owners). | |
If you click into the chart, a play icon, a gearwheel icon, and a close button become visible.

Click on the y-axis label to format the y-axis or to select a different measure. | |

Chart Types
PatentSight provides a variety of charts suitable for your analyses. Depending on your specific use case, you can change the chart type in the chart settings.

Chart Settings
Under "Edit Chart", you can adjust the chart settings, its appearance and parameters. You can access the chart settings via the gearwheel icon in the upper right corner of the chart. If the gearwheel icon is not visible, click anywhere into the chart to select it.
Access different tabs to adjust different parts of the chart.

Under general, you can select your desired chart type. | |
The tab "General" allows you to set the axes and other general settings. All other tabs contain more advanced settings. |
Once you have selected a chart type, the desired chart is immediately displayed, and you can use general settings to adjust the chart axes.
Note: The general chart settings depend on the chart type. While general settings of the bubble chart allows you to change the bubble area, for example those of the bar chart allow you to slice and group the bars.
Access the other tabs in the chart settings to adjust the scaling and labeling of axes and bubbles, as shown below.

Changing Item Colors
You can customize the color of any item displayed in your chart.
Click on a bubble to open the drilldown menu

Click on "Change Color" to select the color for the item displayed by this bubble. The selected color will be applied not only to this bubble but to all visualizations of this item in all other charts in your workbook. |
Adjusting the Axes
Click on the y-axis label to format the y-axis or to select a different measure

Click on the x-axis label to format the x-axis or to select a different measure. |
Note: You can also adjust the Axes via the chart settings.
Bubble Trail
In bubble charts, you can visualize the development over time by displaying the bubble trails or by playing an animation.
Click on the gearwheel icon to access the chart settings.

Check "Show Bubble Trails" to display the bubble trails that visualize the development over time. | |
Each bubble represents a certain point in time, i.e., a specific Reporting Date, with increasing transparency meaning that the bubble shows a point in time further in the past. | |
Click on the play button to watch an animation of the development over time. |
Hover your mouse over any data point to see the details. In this example, we have selected the portfolio of RELX at the Reporting Date 12/31/2014.
First, insert two or more charts of your choice, e.g., a bubble chart and a bar chart.

Click on "Insert" and select "Time Slider" |
Move the time slider to see data at different Reporting Dates.
The time slider will be added under the chart.

Click on the play button of the chart. | |
You can add time sliders to other charts separately by clicking on the respective play button. | |
An animation of the data development over time will start immediately. To stop or resume it, click on the play or stop button, respectively. |
Using the Matrix Chart
The matrix chart allows you to perform an analysis with two groupings. There are two different options to insert a matrix chart.
Option 1 - Access the section "Charts" under "Analysis Templates.

Select the template "Technology Matrix". | |
Option 2 - Click on "Insert" and select "Chart". | |
Click on the gearwheel icon of the chart to access the chart settings. | |
Under "General", select the chart type "Matrix". Next, select groupings for the x-axis and the y-axis and a measure for the bubble area. |
The matrix chart allows you to group by two attributes within a chart. In this example, the matrix chart is grouped by owners (y-axis) and IPC classes (x-axis).
It is also possible to display the actual value represented by each bubble.
Click on the gearwheel icon access the chart settings.

Reading Example: Patent families owned by RELX that belong to the IPC class "G06F 17" have a Patent Asset Index of 200. |
