How to generate a Landscape report using Classifiers
When should I use each option?
Introduction to Landscape Reporting
This feature runs up to 25 classifiers against every patent family with a priority date since 1985 (roughly 45 million patent families). Below we explore how to generate this type of report.
How to generate a Landscape report using Classifiers
In the Landscapes section of the Report Builder, you have the the option to:
- Select whether to include all patent families, or only active families to the report
- Only include families with a member in selected territories
- Only include families added to the Classification platform in the last 30, 60 or 90 days (accession date is used here, which is the date that the information was uploaded to Classification).
When selecting 'next', you can then choose which classifiers you'd like to include to your report.
Report Options
When creating a Landscape report and applying more than one technology classifier, you will be presented with the following report options on report creation.
Group in Mutually Exclusive Technologies (default setting for landscape reports with multiple classifiers)
By default, the option to 'Group in Mutually Exclusive Technologies' will be selected, for landscape reports with multiple classifiers. In choosing this option, each patent family of your Landscape report, will be accounted for in ONE SINGLE classifier category with the highest score above the 0.5 threshold.
Allow Overlapping Technologies
You can choose however to switch to the option to 'Allow overlapping technologies' when multiple Classifiers are applied to your Landscape report.
In choosing this option, each patent family of your Cipher report, will be accounted for in EVERY classifier category with a score above the 0.5 threshold resulting in duplicate results.
When should I use each option?
Consider the question that you're trying to answer with your Landscape report. If you're using the platform to compare and count the number of patent families in your portfolio to your competitors, and reviewing portfolio size or patenting activity, you would likely 'group in mutually exclusive technologies' to avoid double counting of patent families in your report.
If you're using the platform to look into technology trends and to capture ALL inventions across the classifier technologies selected in your report, you would likely select to 'allow overlapping technologies' in order to ensure that ALL results are captured and to see which inventions fall across more than one technology classifier.
If running an overlapping report, how can I see which patent families fall into more than one technology classifier?
You can review this within the results of your report by clicking into the underlying data, and in the technology column, these are split by the vertical bar '|' symbol as follows:
